How do you overcome and change limiting beliefs?

All behavior is belief driven. You can’t remember someone’s name if you believe you have a horrible memory. You can’t be a great reader or leader if you believe you are not. Or change procrastination if you believe you procrastinate.

How do you become a more mindful leader? Whether you’re a student, parent or entrepreneur, how do you lead yourself and how do you lead others for a place of mindful connection and development?

Representative Tim Ryan recently announced his run for president and has a long history representing working-class families in Ohio. What you might not know about Tim is that in addition to his service as a Congressman, Tim is an advocate for mindfulness, meditation, and health and is the author of two books on mindfulness and healthy food.

Mindfulness and leadership are two of the most important words today. We’re living through fractured, disrupted times and calm thoughtful leaders will be essential in guiding communities back toward connectedness, imagination, and change. Unless we learn to reconnect with each other and work together, we will remain unable to solve the many problems facing us.  

In this conversation, we discuss how mindfulness impacts our brains, and how adverse experiences impact the minds of younger generations coming up through our schools. We speak about how mindfulness has given the best leaders the strength to lead and maintain calm through challenging times and find the imagination to lead the country out of a challenge and towards change. Our bodies absorb light and use it as fuel for our bodies, but few of us have been taught about how to harness the power of light to boost our health and happiness. 

Our natural environment deeply affects our bodies—our circadian rhythms are affected by sunlight and increasingly, negatively affected by the blue light so many of us spend hours looking at in the form of laptops and phones. This is problematic because of circadian rhythms regulate our body—telling us when to eat, sleep and produce hormones. We’ve talked a lot on the Kwik Brain podcast about the power of sleep for our brains, so this is an important issue to be aware of if we want to get the most out of our minds!

The Joovv red light therapy device is something I use on a daily basis to ensure I jump start my circadian rhythms and get enough light each day. Today’s guest, Wes Pfiffner, is one of the directors of the company, and he’s here to tell us how impactful red light therapy can be for our bodies and brains.

How do you create change that lasts?

If you want a new result in your life, you have to do a new behavior. To change that behavior, you need a set of capacities, capabilities, and beliefs.

If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.

They say an average person has about 60,000-70,000 thoughts a day, but the problem is that 90-95% of those thoughts are the same thoughts they had yesterday and the day before that. In other words, if you want to do something brand new, you have to stop doing the same thing.
