Can the traits that make you feel socially awkward actually be the key to unlocking extraordinary success?

We’ve all experienced a time when we felt like an outsider looking in. But for some, this isn’t a rare occurrence, but a constant struggle. In fact, research shows 10 – 15% of the population is socially awkward. But there is a strong correlation between social awkwardness and giftedness. You just have to learn how to use it to your advantage.

I’m excited to welcome Ty Tashiro to the show today. Ty is a psychologist and interpersonal relationship expert. He’s spent decades researching human intelligence, neuroscience, personality, and sociology to help us better understand this widely shared trait. He’s also the author of Awkward: The Science of Why We’re Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome.
There are few things more psychologically devastating than social exclusion. But being awkward can be like speaking a second language. By taking the same focus and persistence that you naturally give to things you love and applying it to your social life, you can figure out how to fit in without losing yourself. Listen in as Ty shares how you can turn your unique quirks into your greatest superpower and never grapple over an awkward social interaction again.

Is there a secret to finding joy and happiness in life even when you’re struggling?

If you search the internet for advice on how to be happy, you will come across an ocean of results. Experts tout suggestions like getting good sleep, eating a nutritious diet, practicing gratitude and meditation, and everything in between. But is there a practical, science-based approach for finding these sometimes elusive emotions no matter what life throws your way?
To talk about this topic more in-depth, I’m excited to welcome Tal Ben-Shahar to the show today. Tal is a pioneering expert on positive psychology. He’s lectured all over the world and was the first person to design and launch a Master’s Degree in Happiness Studies. Tal is also the co-founder and chief learning officer of The Happiness Studies Academy.

The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to happiness. But there is a five-step staircase to help you climb out of despair so you can cultivate resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. Listen in as Tal equips you with actionable strategies for finding meaning, nurturing your mind, fostering supportive relationships, and embracing all of your emotions.

Is the air you breathe affecting your brain?

If you’re familiar with the ten keys to a healthy brain, you know that one of the keys is clean environment. Part of that environment is the quality of the air you breathe. You can go weeks without eating, days without water, but you can only go minutes without breathing. Clean air is essential to not just your overall health, but your quality of life.

I’m excited to welcome Peter Spiegel to the show today. Peter is the founder and CEO of Ideal Living, a wellness company democratizing quality. His life’s purpose has been to enhance the lives of others and help them thrive. By sharing science-backed products, he seeks to ensure everyone has access to clean air and pure water.

You want your home to be a sanctuary, but according to the EPA, indoor air can be anywhere from 5 to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Things like perfume, candles, and mold can harm your overall quality of life as the most dangerous particles to the human brain are very, very small. If you want to learn how to manage indoor air quality for your overall well-being, this episode is for you.

Why do you remember some things and forget others?

When it comes to memory, your brain is programmed to forget. That’s why it’s not only important to train your memory, but understand the complex mechanism of how your brain actually records and retrieves the past. Your memories make you who you are and because of the way your brain transforms memories, you can use them to understand the present and imagine the future.

I’m excited to go on a deep dive into this topic with our guest today, Dr. Charan Ranganath. Dr. Ranganath is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, and Director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at UC Davis. For over 25 years, he’s studied the mechanisms in the brain that allows you to remember past events. He’s here to talk about his brand-new book, Why We Remember: Unlocking Memory’s Power to Hold on to What Matters.

There is extraordinary overlap in the brain between the systems that operate your memory and your imagination. You can use this overlap to make better choices that can lead to better memories, and that in turn, can open new opportunities in your life. Listen in as Dr. Ranganath goes into how the brain records and retrieves the past, and what you can do to make your memory stronger.

How does sound impact your body and brain?

If you’re like most people, when you think of calming sounds, you think of music. The link between music and the powerful effect it has on your body, mind, and soul has been recognized since the dawn of time. But it isn’t the only thing you hear on a daily basis. And those sounds can have a powerful impact on not only how you feel, but how you perform.

I’m excited to go on a deep dive into this topic with you today. There have been numerous studies expanding what we know about sound and the brain—some that might surprise you.
Taking control of what is in your auditory environment can shape your cognitive performance and emotional well-being. It can calm your autonomic nervous system, improve your ability to focus and concentrate, and even change your brain wave patterns. Listen in as I go over ways you can amplify how you learn by tuning in to different auditory experiences.

Can the games and activities you played as a child strengthen your brain as an adult?

When you were a child, playing with toys like Legos and puzzles, or even solving word games probably filled you joy and curiosity. They gave you a goal to work towards and provided hours of entertainment as you puzzled over them until you could see the final result. But these activities weren’t just fun, they were good for your neural development, too.

Today, I want to explore the brain-boosting benefits of play and how activities you enjoyed as a child can support cognitive performance across your lifespan. These classic pastimes aren’t just fun, they can actually exercise your brain.

Keeping your brain active and engaged as you age is crucial in maintaining cognitive health and mental performance. Mentally stimulating activities that you enjoy can help boost your memory, improve your reasoning, and sharpen your problem-solving capabilities. Listen in as I go over how you can use toys, games, and puzzles to keep your brain healthy and strong at any stage of life.
