How do you add more fascination and wonder into learning and life?

You heard me say many times that all learning is state dependent. The state you’re in while learning is so important because that information combined with emotion is what helps you to remember what you learned.

We have an extraordinary guest, Danica McKellar. She’s best known for her roles on The Wonder Years and The West Wing, as well as a three-time New York Times bestselling author, internationally-recognized mathematician, and advocates for math education - and now a new mom.

In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about the power of wonder, the power of play, and how you can add more of it in your life.

Welcome to Kwik Challenge #2!

The purpose of these challenges is to take knowledge into action. There’s so much information around us, but knowledge doesn’t become power until we apply what we learn. So during this challenge, we’re going to take a little step each day to build long-lasting habits and results.

Today’s challenge helps to reduce inflammation in your brain & body, build grit, and do the difficult thing.

In this episode, I’ll explain how you can do this each day in baby steps to build a new habit.

And don’t forget to share your progress with me this week on IG by using the hashtag #kwikchallenge and @jimkwik.

Our bodies absorb light and use it as fuel for our bodies, but few of us have been taught about how to harness the power of light to boost our health and happiness.

Our natural environment deeply affects our bodies—our circadian rhythms are affected by sunlight and increasingly, negatively affected by the blue light so many of us spend hours looking at in the form of laptops and phones. This is problematic because of circadian rhythms regulate our body—telling us when to eat, sleep and produce hormones. We’ve talked a lot on the Kwik Brain podcast about the power of sleep for our brains, so this is an important issue to be aware of if we want to get the most out of our minds!

The Joovv red light therapy device is something I use on a daily basis to ensure I jump start my circadian rhythms and get enough light each day. Today’s guest, Wes Pfiffner, is one of the directors of the company, and he’s here to tell us how impactful red light therapy can be for our bodies and brains.

In this episode, we explain the benefits of light therapy, why being conscious of our circadian rhythms is so important, and why we need to watch our usage of blue light. To finish, Wes will give you some quick and simple to harness the power of light in your everyday life.

How do you create change that lasts?

If you want a new result in your life, you have to do a new behavior. To change that behavior, you need a set of capacities, capabilities, and beliefs.

If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.

They say an average person has about 60,000-70,000 thoughts a day, but the problem is that 90-95% of those thoughts are the same thoughts they had yesterday and the day before that. In other words, if you want to do something brand new, you have to stop doing the same thing.

In this episode, I will share 4 keys to turn your “I wish” to “I will,” and make real changes in your behavior and habits.

Today’s business climate has been marked by the rise of organizations built on the principles of exponential thinking—think Github, Airbnb, and Uber. Companies stuck in old linear thinking patterns, like Kodak, have gone out of business. We can no longer rely on repetitiveness and old ideas to get us through—to achieve success in such a competitive climate, we need to be thinking bigger, and constantly changing and developing.

In this episode, we welcome back special guest Salim Ismail! If you haven’t already listened to my first conversation with Salim, I recommend you listen to episode #89.

Imagine if you could improve the performance of your organization by 10x — what would it look like? How can we raise the collective intelligence and wisdom of our organizational teams? Today’s guest Salim Ismail is here to tell us how to transform the way your company does business. As the founder of Singularity University, a board member at XPRIZE, and an internationally bestselling author, Salim has built his career on thinking big and teaching others about industry disruption and exponential thinking.

We cover a lot of ground in this short conversation. We review what makes an exponential organization, explain why new ideas tend to be rejected by legacy organizations and why this is causing stress around the world. We’ll go over some examples of businesses failing due to their inability to take on exponential thinking, and explain why this happens. We’ll talk about how to successfully transform organizations and solve problems. Lastly, we’ll talk about creativity and share a great hack to completely change the way you thinking about saying ‘no’ to ideas.

What are the invisible super-villains that are wreaking havoc on your brain?

This topic is near and dear to my heart. Through this podcast series, I love sharing with you the things we can do to level up our brains, and while it’s important to talk about what to do, it’s also important to cover the obstacles, the invisible forces that are taking you away and holding you back.

To discuss this topic, we have Ben Greenfield, NYT Bestselling Author of “Beyond Training.” Ben is a professional obstacle course racer, completing the coveted Spartan Delta, training with the Navy SEALs, competing across the globe in open water swims, mountain runs, and adventure races, and winning multiple USA bowhunting competitions.

How do you become a multi-sensory learner?

You may be asking, “what is a multi-sensory learner? Is it going to help me with my focus? Is it going to help me retain information better? Is it going to make me a creative thinker?” And my answer is astounding, YES.

Multi-sensory learning is the idea that individuals learn better if you were taught using more than one of your senses.

When it comes to learning, the more senses you stimulate, the more you’re able to learn and attain new knowledge.

In this episode, I’m going to share with you different learning styles and how you can apply them into remembering abstract concepts like numbers.

How do we release happy brain chemicals and not feel loneliness?

More studies indicate that loneliness leads to Alzheimers, dementia, and other mental challenges. Even though we’re more connected than ever before via social media, the level of loneliness people feel have been rising.

To dive deeper into this topic, I have my good friend, Radha Agrawal, in the studio today. Radha is a community force, successful entrepreneur (Co-Founder THINX, LiveItUp), author, globe-trotting speaker, DJ, inventor, and investor. Her new book, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life, answers the questions, "How the heck do I find my people?" and "How do I create large and meaningful communities in the real world?".

Radha spent 18 months synthesizing her key methods for community building, peeling back the curtain on exactly what she and her team did (and continues to do) at Daybreaker so that anyone interested in creating their community can have a blueprint for how to do it.

So many of us work on our physical health—whether that means going to the gym or for a run—without being aware of the brain health benefits we’re receiving. I’m excited to welcome back today’s guest, health expert Shawn Stevenson, to tell us how we can boost our brain potential through quick and simple physical exercises. He's the founder of the Model Health Show Podcast.

Physical training is a powerful way to boost your brainpower and creativity. Simple exercises like push-ups, squats, daily walk, and sprints can help you improve so many aspects of your overall wellbeing and brain function, from sleep to creativity and brain cell production. There’s a lot of confusion out there about strength training, but the truth is that after years of evolution our body needs and expects us to work hard and lift heavy things—and it doesn’t have to mean complicated hours of workouts at the gym.

In this episode, we’ll explain the benefits of strength training and how it is connected to a happier, healthier brain. We’ll walk you through some quick exercises you can incorporate into your day, and explain how your sleep, productivity, and creativity can be improved in a few minutes a day. We’ll also be doing a deep dive into the top four exercises you can start doing today to boost the health of your mind and brain.

Regardless of our age and ability, we can train to prevent our physical and mental muscles from atrophying. In the process, we can improve our mental strength, resilience, sleep, mood, and cardiovascular health, among countless other health benefits. If you’re looking for a simple and effective plan to improve your body and brain health, today’s podcast is for you.
